Podcast: Understanding the Sandwich Generation

I am delighted to have recently joined my colleague and friend, Tom Kaminski, CFP®, on the Sandwich Bread Podcast.

The Sandwich Bread Pod is for people navigating the complex responsibilities of multigenerational life—caring for parents, raising children, and balancing personal and financial demands that often conflict.  The show explores the challenges and decisions facing the Sandwich Generation, and offers grounded conversations and perspectives designed to bring clarity, support, and maybe even a laugh during this demanding chapter of life.

Tom and I discussed what it means to be in the Sandwich Generation - hint, it doesn't have anything to do with the year you were born - and what it's like for many of us who suddenly become caregivers, often in more ways than one.

It was important to me to share some of my own experiences as the caregiver to one of my favorite humans, my late grandmother, Carol. Just as she turned 80 and I turned 30, she was diagnosed with both non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and dementia. I became her primary caregiver and spent the next five years drinking through a firehose. I handled everything from selling her home to choosing a long-term care facility to protecting her from inter-family elder abuse, most of which was all new to me.

Although it was challenging at the time, I have often been grateful to have had these experiences. Not only is it fulfilling to have loved my grandmother well, but I also learned a lot and can relate to what it is like for someone, perhaps you, to go through a similar situation.

Enjoy the pod!
